A digital release
“Our music cannot escape our lives, or the social and political environment we live in” says composer Huang Ruo. And in fact, A Dust in Time is a musical meditation on the current pandemic and how it has affected our lives. “My hope – he continues – is to find any possible way to bring some comfort, calmness and hope to people’s life.”
The piece has three different versions in length and ensemble. BCMG will present the String Quartet version of this inspiring “musical mandala”. In the words of the composer himself, “after the 30 minutes mark everything is descending back to the very opening notes. The ending is the beginning, it can continue infinitely – there is no ending to this piece.”
You can also read what BCMG violin player, Kate Suthers has written for The Strad about the piece and her experience performing and recording contemporary music during lockdown.
